EcoJazz Festival returns to Fuerteventura for its fifth edition on Friday, September 4, 2026, bringing six hours of live music, art, environmental activities and interdisciplinary performances to Playa Chica in Puerto del Rosario.
From 5:00 PM to 11:00 PM, EcoJazz 5 will once again create a meeting point between artistic creation and environmental awareness, with a free program bringing together jazz, technology, nature, visual art, movement and education.
Organized by Enrique Thompson Music, the fifth edition introduces three very different musical projects alongside environmental talks, screenings, birdwatching and multidisciplinary performances.
Three musical projects, three different perspectives
The musical program features Masterplants Orchestra, Groovin’ Jazz Project and EcoJazz All-Stars, an exclusive ensemble created especially for the festival’s fifth edition.
Masterplants Orchestra: when nature becomes music
Led by Tritone Crisantemo from the Damanhur community, Masterplants offers one of the most unusual performances of this year’s festival: music performed by nature itself.
Using pioneering technology, the natural bioelectrical currents of plants are measured and translated into musical scales and rhythms that can be understood by the human ear.
With more than 70 concerts worldwide, Masterplants creates an extraordinary encounter between nature, science, technology and music, transforming plant activity into evolving musical landscapes.
Groovin’ Jazz Project
Fuerteventura will also be represented by Groovin’ Jazz Project, led by guitarist and composer Thomas Figueroa.
The ensemble brings together Thomas Figueroa on guitar, Sergio García on saxophone, Joel Beltrán on piano, Davide Garattoni on bass and Rico Capelli on drums.
Their original music combines the essence of jazz with blues, funk and soul, placing improvisation and real-time musical dialogue at the heart of every performance.
EcoJazz All-Stars: a special ensemble created for EcoJazz 5
The musical program also features EcoJazz All-Stars, an exclusive line-up assembled to celebrate the fifth edition of the festival.
The quintet brings together five distinctive instrumentalists from the Spanish jazz scene:
Lucía Rey — piano
One of the distinctive voices of contemporary Spanish jazz, Rey received the Premio Nacional de Jazz Plataforma Jazz España 2026–2027 and was nominated for Best Jazz Album 2025 by the Spanish Academy of Music for Nómadas.
Anggie Obin — flute
Born in Panama City, Obin studied at Berklee College of Music on a full scholarship and has appeared at the Panama Jazz Festival, Newport Jazz Festival and venues including Smalls and Mezzrow in New York.
Melisa Bertossi — saxophone
An Argentine saxophonist based in Barcelona since 2014, whose work explores spontaneous creation, musical dialogue and the constantly evolving language of jazz.
Blanca Barranco — double bass and voice
A double bassist and singer whose musical path embraces jazz and Latin American roots. She leads the Blanca Barranco Project Band, winner of first prize at the Oliva Jazz competition.
Estefanía Chamorro — drums
A jazz-trained drummer and graduate of the Conservatori Superior del Liceu in Barcelona who has shared the stage with musicians including Bill McHenry, Jorge Rossy, Eric Revis, Masa Kamaguchi and Doug Weiss.
Together, the five musicians form a program created specifically to resonate with the sustainable spirit of EcoJazz.
Art, movement, poetry and sound
Music is only one part of the EcoJazz experience.
Throughout the evening, an interdisciplinary strand will run through the festival, featuring an intervention by visual artist Klaus Berends, poetry by Figu, a soundscape performed by Davide Garattoni on double bass and Joel Beltrán on piano, and a movement piece with Alicia Díaz, Bryan Udaneta and Anna Villacampa.
Environmental awareness at the heart of EcoJazz
Environmental education and Fuerteventura’s natural environment remain central to the festival.
The day begins at 5:00 PM with a guided birdwatching activity by Grupo Ornitológico Alcaidón. Participants will meet at Playa Chica and return at 6:00 PM, when the stage program begins.
Calderones Grises will present The State of Marine Wildlife Today, led by marine biologists María Rodríguez and Alberto Sarabia. The Fuerteventura environmental association works across marine science, environmental education, underwater photography and biodiversity research.
ECOMaris will introduce its work on the blue economy and coastal sustainability across the Canary Islands and other Macaronesian territories.
Agricultural engineer Lidia Castañeda Casañas will present a session on eco-educational school gardens, exploring how low-maintenance teaching gardens can communicate agroecology, biodiversity and sustainability through practice.
Meanwhile, Jo and Marcel Hendrickx of Horeca Sustainability Solutions will explore ways of turning waste into resources, including biodigestion solutions capable of transforming food waste from hotels and restaurants into biogas.
The program will also feature screenings by Protect the Planet, Playitas Resort and Finca Biomilt.
Five years connecting music and the environment
For saxophonist, composer and EcoJazz creator Enrique Thompson, the fifth edition continues the festival’s original mission: creating a space where music, artistic expression and environmental awareness can meet.
“EcoJazz was born five years ago from a simple idea: that a music festival can also be a place where we learn something about the place where we live. Having plants performing on stage this year, and closing the program with five of the country’s finest female instrumentalists, says a lot about where we want to go.”
Through five editions, EcoJazz has continued to explore the connections between music, artistic creation, sustainability and the natural environment of Fuerteventura.
