Jazz education, community engagement and artistic exchange across Fuerteventura.
Since its first edition, Ruta del Jazz has developed a parallel educational programme alongside its concert activities, bringing jazz closer to students, music schools, emerging musicians and local communities through didactic concerts, workshops, masterclasses and interdisciplinary activities.
The third edition opened with education. On 4 November 2025 — weeks before the main concert programme — the Ruta del Jazz ensemble performed a didactic concert at the Auditorio de Corralejo for 2nd year secondary school students and participants of Proyecto 10:45. The session explored the fundamentals of jazz improvisation and collective listening, and marked the first time the edition’s new interdisciplinary approach — connecting music with other art forms — was introduced to a young audience.
“Training the intuition: developing motivic ideas in harmony and rhythm.” On 9 December 2025, German guitarist Torsten De Winkel led a masterclass at the Palacio de Formación y Congresos in Puerto del Rosario, exploring advanced jazz improvisation through the development of motivic ideas — how to build coherent musical statements from simple material and let them evolve naturally within a jazz context. Designed for guitarists with a foundation in jazz who want to go deeper.
On the same day, drummer Ancor Miranda (Tenerife/Belgium · Berklee College of Music) led a parallel workshop on jazz drumming — covering methodology, technique and the drummer’s role in a jazz ensemble: how to think about time, how to listen, and how to build a musical conversation with the rest of the band. Ancor has been part of the Ruta del Jazz core ensemble since the very first edition in 2023.
What does a jazz concert look like when the audience has never been to one before? On 17 June 2024, the Ruta del Jazz ensemble brought a full live set to the Casa de la Cultura in Puerto del Rosario for students of IES Puerto del Rosario — an encounter designed not just to perform, but to explain: how improvisation works, how musicians listen to each other on stage, and what jazz actually is. No sheet music handed out. No silence required. Just music, questions and conversation.
On 18 June 2024, German pianist Lionel Haas (Bonn, Germany) led a jazz piano masterclass at the Escuela de Música Insular de Fuerteventura in Puerto del Rosario — covering harmonic vocabulary, the pianist’s role in a jazz combo and approaches to improvisation. Lionel Haas has performed and taught across Europe and brings a broad perspective to jazz piano that moves comfortably between classical training and jazz language. Open to pianists and musicians of all instruments with an interest in jazz harmony.
On 18 June 2024, the Ruta del Jazz ensemble travelled north to the Auditorio Municipal de Corralejo for a didactic concert with students of IES Corralejo. With international guest musicians Lionel Haas (piano, Germany) and Daryl Taylor (double bass, USA/Germany) on stage alongside the core ensemble, students experienced a level of musicianship rarely seen in a school setting — and were invited to ask the musicians anything. Free entry. No dress code. Just jazz.
“It was a wonderful event, interacting with participants of different ages and backgrounds. We talked about the history of our noble instrument, its role across various musical genres — especially jazz — and how we as bassists interact with our fellow rhythm section players.” — Daryl Taylor
On 19 June 2024, American bassist Daryl Taylor (USA/Germany) led a specialist workshop at the Escuela de Música Insular de Fuerteventura in Puerto del Rosario — exploring the history of the bass, its role in jazz, and improvisation techniques for electric bass and double bass. The session ended with a spontaneous jam, led by cellist Valentina Valkova through Tizol-Ellington’s Caravan.
On 20 June 2024, the Ruta del Jazz ensemble headed south to Morro Jable for a didactic concert at the Sala Polivalente de la Estación de Guaguas — performed specifically for students of the Escuela de Música de Pájara. For many of the young musicians in the room, it was their first encounter with jazz played live by professional musicians. The session was part of a three-day educational programme running across the island that same week, reaching students in Puerto del Rosario, Corralejo and Pájara.

What happens when jazz improvisation and flamenco meet in the same room, with no fixed script? On this open session at Espaciodanza Fuerteventura in Puerto del Rosario, the Ruta del Jazz quintet — joined by some of the finest flamenco dancers on the island — explored the common ground between two traditions built on deep listening, rhythm and spontaneity. Students and enthusiasts of all ages and levels were invited to take part, watch and ask questions. A session about music, movement and what happens when you leave room for the unexpected.
